SRT Solutions is hosting lightning talks at its Ann Arbor office, 206 S. Fifth Avenue, Suite 200, every other Friday from 3-5 p.m. Primarily focused on technology, lightning talks provide each participant a 10 minute open forum to offer news, challenges, or resources for discussion. SRT Solutions will host its next lightning talk on February 29.
"Lightning talks mirror the pace of technology's evolution: The industry moves quickly and you have to continually learn to maintain an innovative edge," explained SRT Solutions co-founder Dianne Marsh. "Lightning talk participants can bring up anything that they might want to know more about or discuss, providing a true collaborative forum and a resource for staying on top of advancements and opportunities."
The limited time each participant is offered to speak helps to develop presentation skills, even for accomplished speakers. Lightning talks also offer participants exposure to a range of topics, including tech experiences, tips, techniques, successes and failures.
"Lightning talks provide education about the latest geek topics and experience expressing myself in front of a group," explained participant Bill Heitzeg, vice president of technology, Summit Mobile Solutions. "Because lightning talks are kept to 10 minutes per participant, the audience gets a short, concise overview of any one topic. Also, because the topics are self-selected, we get an amazing variety of topics, from Braille to the best Podcasts, and I've learned about topics I'm sure I would never have sought out on my own."
"As a speaker, every two weeks I'm excited to come up with a cool topic and, most importantly, present it well," Heitzeg added. "I think I've improved as a speaker and I am certainly more comfortable in front of a group as a result of participating in lightning talks."
