I feel like engineers (and programmers for that matter) would be more likely to use functions if it is easy to remember the function's name and how to call it. Intellisense really helps with this.

As for global variables, I think in many cases they are used just because the person writing the code wants to avoid having a long list of arguments to a function, especially if it's an inexperienced programmer who isn't familiar with structures (when I was in engineering school we learned Fortran 77, which doesn't have structures, and many of my cohort seem to be unaware of them in Matlab or unsure of how they work). Because Intellisense takes the burden of keeping track of lots of arguments to a function off the programmer, it might encourage programmers to break their code up into functions.

I am friends with Jay. I have spent the last two months working on a project that everything is done in Matlab, even if there is another language that would be better suited for the task. I can attest that intellisense is a much needed feature.

Also, I would love to met up with you at lightning talks and pick your brain on some issues I have been having with Matlab ;)

Keep blogging about Matlab!
